day of service to honor dr. martin luther king jr. president barack obama stained a bookcase at an elementary school. >> everybody here, adults to children, understands the importance of giving back. >> reporter: last night, katy perry, usher and others performed at a kids inaugural ball honoring military families and their children. the first lady and her daughters were there as they kicked off three days of parties and balls to celebrate her husband's election. in about 40 minutes, president barack obama will receive the official swearing in from chief justice john roberts. he will be at the white house in the blue room. the president's family will be there with some members of the staff. it will be televised and. tomorrow, the ceremonial swearing in where thousands will be watching it on the washington mall. reporting live, randall pinkston, back to you. >> yeah, expecting thousands to be here. how difficult it is for the ordinary citizen to get a good spot to watch the ceremony? >> reporter: well, probably impossible now. here's why.

ceremony over the weekend at the memorial dedicated to dr. martin luther king, jr. he would have turned 84 last week. today is the national holiday in king's memory. when president obama takes his public oath of office in a few hours, he will use a bible that belonged to king. and in case you're wondering what's closed today. federal and state courts are closed. as are city and county offices. banks and post offices are closed. there is no mail delivery today. as for public transit.bart and muni are operating on a saturday schedule there is weekend service for golden gate transit ferries and a-c transit buses. however, samtrans and caltrain are operating on regular weekday schedule. and in san francisco.parking meters are enforced. >> the dream catcher-the dream lighter-787, still wondering of the fire that could have caused from a battery. they could still be problems with wiring or other internal electrical components. and alsoa commuter plane skids off the runway at newark liberty airport. here you see the united airlines express plane flanked by emergency crews. 13 people were on board
